Choosing Kaká’s Legendary Number, Diego Moreira Officially Joins Milan
Mansion Sports – After a long wait, the official statement announcing AC Milan’s new signing has finally arrived. Diego Moreira is officially an AC Milan player.
The Belgian winger of Portuguese descent arrived in Milan two days ago, underwent the usual medical examinations, and then completed the entire contract-signing process today while waiting for Jorge Mendes to arrive in Italy to make everything official.
Jorge Mendes spent more than six hours at Casa Milan, a sign that, beyond the agreement for the Strasbourg winger, there remains strong synergy with Gerry Cardinale regarding the club’s next moves.
However, the first priority was the long-awaited announcement of a financially significant operation.
Official Statement
AC Milan have announced the permanent signing of Diego Moreira from Strasbourg. The Belgian winger has signed a contract with the Rossoneri until June 30, 2031, and will wear the number 22 shirt.
Born in Liège on August 6, 2004, Diego Moreira developed through the academies of Standard Liège and Benfica, where he completed his development before breaking into professional football.
He first showcased his abilities within Benfica’s youth teams, winning the UEFA Youth League with the Under-19 side during the 2021/22 season and, several months later, the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup.
The following season, he also made his UEFA Champions League debut by featuring in the qualifying rounds of the 2022/23 edition.
In the summer of 2023, he moved to Chelsea and made his first-team debut for the club on August 30 of that year in the Carabao Cup against Wimbledon.
Throughout the 2023/24 season, he also wore the colors of Olympique Lyon before joining Strasbourg permanently in the summer of 2024.
In Alsace, he gradually established himself as one of the most exciting young players in French football, showcasing his pace, technical quality, and tactical versatility.
At international level, Diego Moreira represented Portugal through the youth ranks up to the Under-21 level and also featured at the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Since 2025, he has represented the senior Belgium national team, making his debut in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers and also taking part in the final tournament.
Finally, AC Milan warmly welcomed Diego and wished him success, both personally and with the team, in the Rossoneri shirt.
The Actual Figures
To win the race for his signature, with Roma also having attempted to sign him, AC Milan submitted a major offer: €50 million as a fixed fee plus bonuses, which could take the total value of the deal to €65-66 million. Strasbourg will also retain a percentage of any future sale.
Meanwhile, Diego Moreira has signed a contract valid until June 30, 2031, with a net salary of €3 million per season plus bonuses and commissions for Jorge Mendes, the architect of the operation.
Kaká’s Number 22
Diego Moreira has finally chosen his new shirt number. Previously one of Belgium’s important players wearing number 24, he will wear number 22 at AC Milan, a number made famous by Ricardo Kaká and left vacant following Emerson Royal’s departure last summer.
First Words
“I am excited and also a little bit incredulous, because when you talk about AC Milan, you talk about trophies, history, and all the great players who have played here.”
“This is an extraordinary club: you know what they expect from you, and I am convinced that this is the right time to come here.”
“It is very important to me that people understand that I am a young man who likes to joke around, but I am also very focused and, on the pitch, I give everything for my teammates, the fans, and the club. That will never change because it has been part of who I am since I was a child.”
